I lost a day somewhere. Funny how regulated I am to what I do depending on what day of the week it is.
I called up my chiropractor to make an appointment on Tuesday. They could only fit me in if I made it before 11. What? I need to come in now, doesn’t he know that? Uh, today is Tuesday and he is always there a half day on Tuesday. Me – Oh sorry, I thought it was Monday.
And so my week has gone. I have tried to compensate by adding another day and now I think it is Thursday. I’m so confused.

Over the weekend, I hiked up behind my house – “behind my house” is 3 zillion acres of wilderness – and I went to this ridge trail. This picture was taken as I was at the top and as you can see the sun was quickly setting. I had a long way to hike down before dark.

I didn’t make it.

I had to hike the last two miles in the dark. I did have the foresight to bring a flashlight and I had two dogs with me. If I didn’t have my flashlight I would have sat down and sucked my thumb and waited for the calvary to rescue me. But I made it. Isn’t it beautiful!

Some day I will get a nice camera. I only posses a point and shoot and it is hard to take landscape shots, but you can get some idea of the beautiful colors.

Here is another shot. Wow! Awesome colors.

Then, watched the kiddos. Addison is now walking.

Walking, walking everywhere!

It was hard trying to capture her on film because she wouldn’t hold still long enough. Take a look at that smile. (and that tummy!)

Of course, Zachary wanted me to take a picture of him “walking”. He didn’t want to miss out on any of the attention.

They are so much fun but I think I need a nap now. zzzz

We have so much fun watching the grand kiddos. They spent night and we were playing outside near the firewood that we are gathering for the winter. Zachary loves playing around the wood and decided that he needed to build a house.

See that rock on the lower left corner on the ground, that is the “door” to the house. Gosh I just love the creativity and imagination.

No house is complete without a sprinkling of sawdust.

Earlier this month my husband and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary. It is hard to believe we have been married for that long because I am only 29 years old. Or is it 39. Or maybe… maybe age is just a number so who really cares right???

I read this recently…
Life is fun and needs to be shared with our best friend, playmate and lover. This then is the rule of life for wives; Live with thanksgiving, forgiveness and joy and enjoy all your moments as if they were your last. Someday, soon enough, they will be.

I really like that as a reminder not to get bogged down the day to day struggles and frustrations.

Anniversary day.
I like to say I am an easy date. Take me hiking in the wilderness and I am a happy camper. Really.

So we went to this trail, it is near Glacier park. The boundaries of the park are on one side of the highway and we were on the other, so we were just outside of the park. This area does not get very many hikers. This is one way of saying we were the only ones there.

After you hike in about a mile you begin to see these.

You can see a little reflector on the tree, to mark the tree, and then a few strands of wire wrapping around on the left side of the tree, kind of like barbed wire.

Then if you look closer at the wire you will see this.

That is grizzly bear hair.
Now tell me, if you were hiking near Glacier Park, no other hikers around, in a remote part of the forest, and you saw this, would you begin to squirm a little in your hiking boots? I sure did. It is a bit of a creepy feeling knowing that a big bear had been scratching himself on this tree that I am now standing next to.

The reason for the wire is, it is posted in certain sections of forest where the grizzly bear is known to roam, the bears scratch against the wires and it collects a bit of their hair. Different people are assigned to go collect the hair and then they do DNA testing on the bear hair to help them determine the population and other things of interest about the bears.

Standing there looking at the tree I began to wonder how they knew where to put the wire, on which trees? It turns out that the bears are already going around and scratching the trees with their backs and their claws to mark their territory. So the park rangers look for the trees that the bears have already marked.

Like this one. The wire is on the other side.

Do you see those claw marks? Yes a big bear did that with his claws. Now if that doesn’t give you the creepies I don’t know what will.

Here Don has put his hand next to the scratch marks to reference the size.

We continued on our hike for about 10 miles round trip and we saw about a dozen of these trees with hair and various scratches.

Fortunately, for us we made it back down and at the end of the hike we had this view. This would be looking towards Glacier.

I hope you have enjoyed this little venture into bear world.

Safety Notice – The bears are not generally interested in people and we take all of the recommended bear safety precautions while hiking.

See those little purple things hiding in the bushes.

Bears love em.

People love em.

They make great cobblers, taste great in muffins, ice cream, pancakes and jams.

After a few hours of work, this is what you can gather.

Oh my.

After market it was so nice to get away for a few days into the wilderness.

To get to this beautiful location you drive.
Take a dirt road and drive another 50+ miles.

Turn and drive some more. Turn again and drive. Then you arrive at this beautiful place.

It looks a lot like my back yard. Minus the water. Minus the drive.
And minus this beautiful creature.

I fell in love with her. And I think she with me.

She is a palomino Morgan horse, owned by another lady who, sadly, will not part with her. Not that I have a place for a horse or anything like that.

Just look at those big soft brown eyes. She is a gentle giant of a sweetheart.

I love this horse. I loved her sisters too, but I loved her more.

I did not get to ride her but I did ride another horse. We rode into a place that is only accessible by horseback, or by an airstrip, consisting of a large cleared out field which abruptly ended with a drop off into the river far below. Don’t worry it was a very long field. Or if you have no horse you could backpack in there.
It was beautiful!
We saw many, many mule deer. One cow elk and signs of (gulp) grizzly bear.

It was such a nice way to unwind for a few days after the many months of craziness to prepare for market.
I love it!
Hoping for many more days out in the woods this summer.
